Ron Gellis

Marriage Counseling Director

My family

I have been married to Robyn for 25 years. I brought two children into the marriage one medically retired from the Navy and finishing his Masters Degree at Emory as a Physician Associate. Our daughter is in heaven. Together we have had many puppies and currently our sweet “baby boy puppy,” Sammy.

My story

I was born in New York City as the youngest of three children, with two older sisters. My home life was difficult and often felt like a war zone. God was not part of our family, and my father was emotionally disconnected and mostly absent. My mother struggled deeply with her mental health and addiction.

School was challenging for me from an early age. I faced many obstacles and barely graduated high school, but I found some encouragement and support through sports. Despite these early struggles, I carried a deep longing for something more.

At 26, after years of battling addiction and destructive patterns, I reached a breaking point. On a cold winter day in New York City, I accepted that if something didn’t change, my life would soon end. In search of warmth, I stepped into a church. There, I found myself transfixed by the Cross, wondering what it truly meant.

That moment sparked a journey of searching and visiting churches, always drawn back to the Cross. Over time, my life began to transform. I pursued education, eventually earning a Master’s Degree in Developmental Psychology, a Master’s Degree in School Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

I went on to serve as a psychologist in the Navy in San Diego. One day, my commanding officer — a recovering alcoholic — shared his story with me. His honesty deeply impacted me. On April 10, 1985, I made a decision to get sober through AA, and I experienced true healing through my faith in Jesus Christ.

While in California, I was deeply involved at Saddleback Church, serving in various ministries and growing in my relationship with Christ. After 40 years there, I was invited to Texas in 2022 to serve as Clinical Director for a treatment program for veterans. I also felt called to help build a connection with the recovery ministry at CyLife Church. From the moment I arrived at CyLife Church, I knew I had found my new spiritual home.

Today, at 77, I am deeply grateful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for transforming my life and giving me renewed purpose. I know He is not done with me yet, and I look forward to seeing how He will continue to work in and through me.
